Explore Game of Thrones iconic locations like Lovrijenac Fortress and the Battle of Blackwater Bay city walls with free time after in Old Town. more...

Visit several of Old Town’s most iconic sites, which gained even greater fame after serving as locations for the fictional capital King’s Landing in “Game of Thrones.”

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in the oldest section of Dubrovnik, a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fans of the TV series “Game of Thrones,” which is based on George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels, will recognize this part of Dubrovnik as King’s Landing, the fictional capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

Your first stop will be imposing Lovrijenac Fortress, located just outside the medieval walls that encircle Old Town. Known as Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar, the 11th-century fortress perches atop a craggy rock overlooking the sea, which represented Blackwater Bay in the books.

Continuing on, you will enter Old Town and make your way to the defensive walls to the south. After climbing the steps, you will walk along the stone battlements, which afford extraordinary views of the sea and the inner city. These walls appeared in numerous scenes in “Game of Thrones”; they were particularly prominent in the Battle of Blackwater Bay.

Later, you will enjoy free time within Old Town, where you may explore other sites that you may recognize from the series. For instance, the Jesuit Staircase was where Cersei Lannister began her Walk of Shame in Season Five, and many of the show’s market scenes were filmed along St. Dominic Street. Following free time, you will return to the pier.

Venture into the beautiful Thingvellir national park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site only about 30 miles from Reykjavik, and ranking at the top of Iceland’s attractions. This national park offers outstanding sceneries of mountains surrounding a vast lava plain covered in green moss and wild flowers. Head to the Geyser area where you’ll see hissing springs, bubbling pools and other geothermal phenomena. Lunch will be served nearby, amongst these scenic surroundings.

Another highlight of your day is the Gullfoss waterfall. The ‘Golden Waterfall’ is the most famous of the country’s many waterfalls. Here, the river Hvita drops 96 feet in two falls, creating an awesome spectacle. Being located on an old magma chamber, Hveragerdi is notorious not only for its abundance of hot springs, which heat the community’s greenhouse industry, but also for its earthquakes.

Enjoy an enlightening introductory walk through Nanortalik, the southernmost town in Greenland. Founded in 1797, Nanortalik is the country’s 10th-largest town despite having only about 1,350 residents. Even the translation of its name, which means “the place with polar bears,” indicates that nature not people rules supreme.

For an authentic glimpse into daily life in this rather remote town, you will see the local school, police station and fire department. As you walk about, the guide will describe in detail the challenges and joys of living in Nanortalik. You will also browse the open-air museum in old town, a collection of colonial-era buildings such as turf huts that reflect the area’s history. Inside, you will find exhibits of model boats, leather clothing able to withstand harsh conditions and fishing gear that the indigenous Inuits use. It is believed that the Inuits were among the Arctic people that invented the kayak about 4,000 years ago.

Admire the city’s marquee attractions, stopping for photos at the key landmarks before visiting St. Demetrius Church and the Archaeological Museum.

After departing from the pier, you will soon enter the heart of Thessaloniki, a thriving metropolis that is the second largest city in Greece. Considering its size and the importance of Thessaloniki in the ancient world, there are plenty of fascinating attractions. The most recognizable is the White Tower, a 15th-century fortress that has become the city’s symbol.

Even older are the Arch and Rotunda of Galerius, which the emperor built in the 4th century to commemorate his victory over Persia. Although many of the supporting buildings have now crumbled, these two structures have stood the test of time. Similarly, the citadel and Thessaloniki’s defensive walls are reminders of its tumultuous history. The best views are from Upper or Old Town, one of the few areas that survived the great fire of 1917.

Of course, not all of the attractions are ancient. You will also pass the International Trade Fair grounds and the campus of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Still, the tug of history is irresistible, especially as you meander through St. Demetrius Church admiring the Byzantine mosaics that depict the story of the saint. More historical artifacts await you at the Archaeological Museum, which includes exhibitions on subjects such as prehistoric Macedonia and the use of gold in jewelry, coins and clothing. After browsing the museum, you will return to the pier.

    Best of Lanzarote

Explore the stunning Timanfaya National Park, witness volcanic phenomena, taste Malvasia wine, visit Mirador del Rio, and Jameos del Agua. more...

You’ll journey to the southern part of the island passing the picturesque villages of Macher and Uga and cross a huge black lava stream to get to the Timanfaya National Park. At the Visitors Center, you’ll learn about the volcanic phenomenon in Lanzarote. There are various exhibition rooms, each equipped with different interpretative resources. Then, it’s off to Timanfaya National Park, a natural museum of unique beauty. Bizarre craters, streams of lava, and fields of ash are mixed here with a nearly unrealistic lunar landscape, all formed during the last eruption in the 18th century. Upon arrival to Islote de Hilario, a crater with the highest surface temperatures in the region, you’ll experience still-existing activity not far underground as you gather around for fun demonstrations.

The geothermal energy is so strong that water gushes up and dry weed catches fire within seconds. At the restaurant El Diablo, food is cooked on a natural grill powered by the heat from the earth below. Board the coach to embark on a tour of the Fire Mountains called "Lunar Route" which goes deep inside the heart of the national park and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Through a recorded narration you’ll learn about the history of the volcanic eruptions and see how slowly life conquers the inhospitable landscape with very few endemic plants. Continue to the valley of La Geria where the famous Malvasia grape is cultivated. Here you’ll be able to taste the wine produced from the grapes that grow in deep holes surrounded by semicircular volcanic stone walls that protect the delicate vines from the strong winds.

Next, stop will at Mancha Blanca Village to enjoy a buffet-style lunch at Los Dolores Restaurant. Then continue to the Mirador del Rio viewpoint, built into the precipice of the Famara Mountains and also designed by Cesar Manrique. From the steep cliffs you’ll appreciate fantastic views (weather permitting) of the small island of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza. Drive to the northern area of the island known for its volcanic tunnels, product of strong eruptions that have carved caves and passages. The largest lava tunnel called Jameos del Agua is probably the most overwhelming, transformed into a small paradise by local artist Cesar Manrique. You’ll return to the harbor driving through the eastern coast of the island and passing the villages of Guatiza and Mala.

Enjoy a drive to the southern part of Lanzarote, passing the picturesque villages of Macher and Uga and crossing black lava streams before arriving to the southwest coast of the island. Pass by El Golfo, a breath taking green Lake, for a photo stop before reaching the Timanfaya National Park. The park is a natural museum of unique beauty. Bizarre craters, streams of lava and fields of ashes formed by eruptions during the 18th century are mixed here in a nearly unrealistic lunar landscape. Upon arrival to Islote de Hilario, a crater with the highest surface temperatures in the region, you’ll experience still-existing activity not far underground as you gather around for the fun demonstrations. Through a recorded narration, you’ll learn about the history of the volcanic eruptions and see how slowly life conquers the inhospitable landscape with very few endemic plants. From here you’ll drive to the wine-growing area of La Geria where the locals have modified grape growing through the centuries in order to preserve the vines from the harsh natural elements and provide a special cultivation for the grapes that produce the famous Malvasia wine. These vines are grown inside dimple-like craters and surrounded by volcanic stone semi-circles (called Zocos), built for each individual vine to provide much needed protection from the fierce winds. Visit one of the local wine cellars for a taste of the local wine before the return drive to your ship.

Converse with the locals in a small Croatian village and together cook a traditional dish affectionately known as Dalmatian pizza.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque, mostly coastal drive through the Croatian countryside to a traditional village in the Poljica Republic. Upon arriving, you will meet you host and mingle with some of the locals that will be joining you for lunch.

Croatian cuisine in coastal regions often includes seafood such as squid and Adriatic white fish, although heavier stews with lamb and vegetables are also popular. The baked dish peka is another traditional favorite that is slow-cooked “under a bell,” a phrase referring to the dish being cooked in a pot with a bell-shaped lid that is then covered with burning embers.

ce the fire is going, you will join the villagers and together prepare soparnik, a dish so traditional that it is included on Croatia’s list of intangible cultural heritage. Known more familiarly as Dalmatian pizza, soparnik is a meatless dish made with wheat flour, Swiss chard, onion, olive oil, garlic and salt.

You will participate in each step of the process, one of the keys being how the uncooked ingredients are combined and placed between two wooden boards. While the concoction is cooking between the boards in the open hearth, the locals will entertain you with traditional accordion music. In no time, lunch will be served.

Gain a cultural and historical understanding of Nagoya by visiting attractions that reveal how the area has changed over the centuries. Nagoya Castle Honmaru Palace lends insight into 17th-century Japan. Although destroyed by fire during World War II, the castle has been faithfully reconstructed using the original methods of construction. The golden sea creatures on the castle’s roof have become a symbol of Nagoya.

For a look into more modern Japan, you will visit the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, an attraction that celebrates industrial innovations. You can expect to see exhibits on textiles, automotive breakthroughs and steam engine technology. Atsuta Shrine will present a glimpse into the Shinto religion. It is known most famously for the legendary sword that is enshrined there. The weapon is so sacred that it is never displayed, however, thousands of other artifacts are exhibited, including holy garments, utensils for deities and ancient documents.

Behold the architectural landmarks that have defined Thessaloniki over the centuries and then enjoy a leisurely drive through a verdant forest that lies on the outskirts.

After departing from the pier, you will drive along the city’s seaside boulevard, where you will soon come upon Aristotelous Square. Designed following the great fire of 1917, the mansion-flanked square has become a revered symbol of the city. Nearby, you will also find the iconic White Tower, a 15th-century fortress on the waterfront.

Continuing on, one landmark after another will come into view, including the Arch and Rotunda of Galerius, which the emperor built in the 4th century to commemorate his victory over Persia. Then, there is the city’s esteemed Archaeological Museum and St. Demetrius Church, the site where the saint was imprisoned and eventually martyred.

Saint Sophia Church is another highlight that reveals much about Thessaloniki’s past. Based on its masonry, it may date from the early 8th century. Over the centuries it has been converted into a mosque, rededicated for Christian worship, partially destroyed in World War II, and severely damaged by an earthquake. Yet, it still stands, a beautiful representation of Thessaloniki’s resiliency

As a counterpoint to the city tour, you will take a short drive through Sheikh Sou forest on the outskirts. As there are very few green spaces within Thessaloniki, this lush wonderland is revered for its serenity. It makes for a welcome respite. Following a refreshment stop, you’ll return to the pier.
